49th International Viola Society Congress
About the event
The Brazilian Viola Society (ABRAV), with major support from the Arts Institute at Unicamp and the Dean of Extension and Culture, will be hosting the 49th International Viola Congress in Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil, from July 17 to 21, 2024. This is the first IVC held in South America. Its purpose is to bring quality performances, lectures, workshops and masterclasses to Campinas, with Brazilian and International artists from 20 countries, united around the theme: “Celebrating the fusion of Cultures: a world of music for viola”.
The theme is inspired by fusion food, a culinary style that harmoniously combines ingredients and techniques from different cultures, developing creative and surprising dishes. Every international event is marked by the exchange and sharing of knowledge between people from different countries. From this transforming interaction, new and important knowledge is produced. One of the ideas for inviting our international guest artists for this IVC, for example, is that they have a connection with Brazil and Brazilian music.

Almost all the event’s activities will take place in Unicamp’s charming campus, located in the district of Barão Geraldo, in the outskirts of Campinas. Located about 100 km (60 miles) from São Paulo, Campinas is a lively city with 1.2 million inhabitants. The Arts Institute has a 180-seat concert hall, and the Music Department has 3 large classrooms that can accommodate 60-80 people for recitals, lectures and masterclasses. There are also plenty of rooms for individual and group practices.
Besides that, just outside the main building, there is a recently built Arena Theatre, surrounded by beautiful trees and nature that will be an excellent backdrop to the Congress.
Sala Watari
For the gala concert, we have established a partnership with “Sala Watari” (Watari Hall), a unique space dedicated to chamber music, surrounded by gardens with flowers and trees from different parts of the world. The featured artists of this special occasion are violist Tatjana Mead Chamis (Pittsburgh Symphony and Carnegie Melon University, USA) and pianist/composer André Mehmari, one of Brazil’s leading creative and performing musicians.
